Libre Graphics Meeting 2013

Slide1This is a presentation to the Libre Graphics Meeting 2013.  We were not able to attend so we did a virtual presentation as the next best thing.

This is a presentation about the past present and future of GIMP Magazine. I cover how and why we got started, where we are at now, and where we would like to evolve to.
GIMP Magazine features the amazing works created from an enormous community from all over the world estimated at around 8-10 million people. Photography, digital arts, tips and tricks, step by step tutorials, master classes, help desk questions, and so much more are showcased and explored in this free publication.

At the time of this presentation we have three issues published, and a fourth already in the works. We have 400,000+ impressions and over 9000 followers. The reception has been amazing!

Here is the presentation on YouTube

Article by Dave Lepek.  Andrea is a master of HDR photography and short focal lenses (wide-angles and fisheyes).  Andrea usually shoots architecture and landscapes because these genres suit more to his equipment and processing skills.  The photography here is outstanding.  He specializes in HDR and his shots are processed in GIMP.  Andrea can be reached at http://www.flickr.com/people/anzanov/

BREAKING NEWS: WILBER HAS BEEN SPOTTED!

We have been informed by a very reliable source that Wilber has been spotted in the wild.  You remember Wilber, the lovable mascot of GIMP software, also adorning the cover of GIMP Magazine?  The confidential report indicated to us that Wilber was seen off the coast of Africa in a casino of all places.  What Wilber was doing in this casino is still unclear to us, but we are continuing to gather reconnaissance.  Wilber should be careful of being seen in public because Dave is on “The Hunt for Wilber”.  To be safe, perhaps Wilber should consider playing on a site like partycasino.com rather than being seen in public view?  Dave has been tracking Wilber all over the world, and we will share the next adventure with all of you in Issue 3 of GIMP Magazine.  Be sure to read Dave’s journal in Issue 2 of GIMP Magazine to discover some of the back story.  A special thanks goes out to Dave Lepek,  Yeshua Nel, and Sandra Livingston for creating this new and exciting graphic novel.  If you have seen Wilber in the wild, send us a tweet, g+, email, and we will share it with everyone (except Dave)!

GIMP Magazine Issue 3 launches on March 6th and we want you to help us melt another server on launch day.  We have received the print test of Issue 3 and it is perfect.  The HD image quality, the paper quality, perfect binding, and sharp print make this an amazing magazine.  The print version is so much better than digital and this is a true testament to the outstanding quality of open source tools like GIMP, Inkscape and Scribus.  MagCloud did another great job with printing and shipping our magazine (even in a major messy snow storm).  Kudos to http://gimpmagazine.magcloud.com and FedEx.   Issue 3 is only four sleeps away, and we can’t wait to share this with you.

This article and so many others were edited by Sandra Livingston who can be reached at

Also a big thanks to Rolf from Meet The GIMP for not only hosting this website, but also maintaining it for us.

GIMP Magazine would not be possible if not for the extraordinary efforts of the GIMP Magazine team members, and everyone who contributes and submits to the magazine.  Cheers, see you March 6th!

We have the first issue of something truly cool here, “The Hunt for Wilber”  By Dave Lepek. We can’t wait to share this with you and continue the journey in upcoming issues.  It was fun to work with Dave and Yeshua while seeing this story unfold in an amazing looking graphic novel style.

200,000+ IMPRESSIONS

GIMP Magazine on Issuu.com (where we host the magazine) has measured over 200,000 views.  This is incredible.  Issue 2 had over 100,000 impressions in it’s first month of release, considerably more than Issue 1.  These numbers are way beyond our original estimates, and they do not include some other big sites that have posted our PDF on their website for download. Thanks everyone for making GIMP Magazine a huge success!

Issue 3 will launch to the world on March 6th in all the regular formats (Issuu, PDF direct download) as well as high quality print format and tablet format (e.g. iPad).  Help support GIMP Magazine and have one delivered to your door, or tablet!

P.S. We have already started to work on Issue #4, with an incredible photography/digital arts combined story.  Keep your submissions coming in!  We need more full length articles and tutorials!

Call for Content – Issue 4

It’s that time again.  This is a call for submissions for Issue #4.  Remember to use our submissions form at http://gimpmagazine.org/submissions

On a separate note, we have been working hard on Issue #3.  Most of the content was actually written and edited last year.  Unfortunately we did have a significant delay over the holidays due to unexpected illnesses that hit several people on our team.  Having said this we are all better now.   The content for Issue #3 has been proof edited and we are in the layout stage.

We hope to hit our goal of providing a quarterly magazine, that would have Issue #3 due for release early in March some time.  More to follow on this and we will announce a release date soon.

We have some absolutely amazing photography and articles in Issue #3 and we are looking forward to this release.  The theme for Issue #3 is a focus on photography with some very cool special features.

I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome in three new members of our team.  Debi Dalio has joined our team as a writer / editor and a contributor of all things digital arts.  Ian Muttoo who you may know from the cover photography / story of Issue #1 has joined us as a regular contributor for photography articles.  And Yeshua Nel who you may know from the illustration on the cover of Issue #2 has joined us as as well.  Yeshua will be providing the illustrations for The Hunt for Wilber, our graphic novel and hopefully some more amazing master classes.  Debi, Ian and Yeshua can be reached at

Debi Dalio - http://clownfishcafe.blogspot.com/
Ian Muttoo - http://www.flickr.com/photos/imuttoo/
Yeshua Nel - http://yeshuanel.deviantart.com/

We look forward to your submissions.  The due date for submissions will be March 1st.  Everyone is welcome and encouraged to submit.
